Board Selects Superintendent Search Firm

School Board Selects HYA Associates To Lead Superintendent Search
Posted on 10/24/2023

At their Monday, Oct. 23 Special Board Meeting, the Tahoma School Board voted unanimously (3-0) to engage Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA) to help lead the search for Tahoma’s next superintendent.

The three voting board directors were Pete Miller (President, Position 4), Jennifer McMaster (Position 1) and Matt Carreon (Position 5), who constituted a quorum to take action. Director Michael Wiggins (Position 2) was unable to attend the meeting, but has shared his support for engaging HYA to conduct Tahoma’s superintendent search.

Since 1987, HYA has provided support for education leaders to employ school executives, address issues related to student performance, and support aspects of school district operations. The firm has served over 1,600 school districts in 42 states, including eight districts in Washington.

While HYA Associates is a national firm with a wide reach, they employ a network of over 135 localized associates who focus on the regions in which they are based. The two consultants who will be working with Tahoma School District are based out of the Puget Sound region.

The proposal presented by HYA includes fees totaling $21,500, plus associate travel. This rate is competitive with each of the four other firms who proposed services to the board.

The board will meet with HYA for a planning meeting at the Nov. 7 work study season, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. More information regarding this meeting will be available on BoardDocs prior to the Nov. 7 work study.

The next phase in the search will include gathering input through stakeholder interviews, focus groups, forums and surveys. Data from this stakeholder research will help HYA generate a Leadership Profile Report, which will inform candidate qualities that match Tahoma School District needs.

Please be on the lookout for stakeholder engagement opportunities in the coming weeks.
