Incoming 6th Graders: District Devices in the Fall

For Incoming 6th Graders: District Chromebooks in 2022-23
Posted on 05/20/2022

Starting this fall, all 6th grade students (current 5th graders) will use a district-issued Chromebook as their school device to use throughout their time in middle school and into high school if they choose. This is a shift in our 1:1 technology strategy for middle school because we discovered that the challenges of students bringing their own device in middle school outweigh the benefits.
Below are some frequently asked questions about this transition:

Is my incoming 6th grader required to use a Tahoma-issued device in 2022-23?

Yes. All 6th graders will be provided with a brand-new Google Chromebook that they will bring to school (charged) each day and use at home for school assignments, projects, and communication.

How do I check out a device for my student?

Parents/guardians of active 5th grade students must fill out the 2022-23 TSD Secondary (6-12 grade) Student Chromebook Checkout Form which is available in Skyward Family Access (directions). Devices will be distributed before school starts in the fall (more information to come). New parents/guardians registering their 6th grader for the 2022-23 school year may reach out to the registrar at their student's middle school for the link to check out a device.

Why is Tahoma no longer allowing 6th graders to bring their own devices?

The challenges experienced by students who brought their own device were greater than anticipated and outweighed the benefits. We anticipate that this shift to district devices for all middle school students (starting with next year’s 6th graders) will create a more robust, safer and equitable technology environment for our middle school students. We will be better equipped to provide tech support on district devices, provide back-up devices/chargers if students forget theirs at home, and easily troubleshoot connectivity issues. This also gives staff better control over what content students are accessing at school.

Why are students in grades 7-12 still permitted to use their own devices?

This is a phased approach to having all middle school students on district-issued devices over the next three years. We are allowing families who have purchased personal devices for their current middle/high school student, or whose student has become accustomed to a personal device, to continue using them.

I prefer my student doesn’t use ANY devices. Do they have to take a district device?

Yes, devices are an essential piece of the curriculum in many classes. If there are individual concerns, please contact your student’s middle school principal to determine if there is an alternative learning plan that suits your student’s needs.

I have younger students. Will they also be required to use a Tahoma-issued device when they get to middle school?

Yes. All incoming 6th grade classes will be issued district Chromebooks beginning in 2022-23.

I have other questions about 1:1 access for secondary students. Where can I learn more?
