Operations

Sustainability is taught but also practiced in the Tahoma School District. Tahoma employs sustainable practices in the maintenance and operation of the district, saving money and setting a positive example in the community. This effort began in earnest in 2009 when the district hired McKinstry, a resource conservation management firm, to examine how the district could improve. The district also worked closely with the King County Green Schools program and has earned the first Level 3 rating for a school district, which reflects significant increases in recycling and composting and reduction of energy and water usage. Further steps toward sustainability will be more challenging but are within reach thanks to the success of existing programs and the shift in thinking by students and adults.
